Star Bench

Star Bench is an interactive public sculpture which blurs the line between functional and formal. The project dissected the classical five-pointed star and reassembled it in order to tell stories about the past of the star and speculates future formations for the common symbol. The robust timber and steel construction is accented with fine meandering texts which inscribe writen histories and questions into the seating structure.

Star Bench was built for The 3rd Ward Chess Park, a multi-use communty space built from the ground up by members of the 3rd Ward, Houston TX. The production of the bench would not have been possible without the generous studio resources and engenering consultation from Flying Carpet Creative. The design, material and labor costs were coverd by a grant from the Houston Arts Aliance.
