Max Syron has an interdisciplinary practice whose materials range from glass to events, public installations to writing. His work is focused on picking apart compacted formal and symbolic orders, which appear to be the natural foundations of everyday life. Max is drawn towards the complex relation between artisans and materials, and the ways in which they have influenced historical conceptions of “the good life”.
Max currently works primarily with the project Småland Massive, an alternative dance community built through unique events and happenings in Kalmar Region. His work with exhibition design and sculpture have become his primary tools for shaping spaces and experiences that both welcome and challenge visitors. This project emerged from the lack of contemporary dance music offerings in the region, as well as the need for spaces that focus on guests who do not feel that they can be themselves at mainstream bars and music venues.
Max holds an MFA in Art from the California Institute of Art and a BFA in Sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He has participated in group shows in the US, UK, Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, and Romania.
He lives in Vassmolösa, Sweden and works as a Curator for The Glass Factory, in Boda Glasbruk, and as a Workshop Manager and Tutor at Ölands Folkhögskola.
